At a time were budgets and pay have been squeezed to death by schools across the country, the number of schools purchasing counselling services for their students have almost doubled in the last three years. An incredible statistic has shown that two-in-three schools in England provided school-based support for students’ mental and emotional well being last year in comparison to thirty-six per cent in 2016.
Only five per cent of school leaders believe that children receive help when they need it after they have been referred to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) which is why they are now purchasing their own counsellors to assist the best they can. It comes after the UK was warned by the children’s commissioner that it is at least a decade away from having a comprehensive mental health service for children; this is not good enough for our children and young people throughout the country.
School’s cannot tackle mental health on their own, they need help from the NHS however with the uncertainty of recruitment in the NHS regarding Brexit, it is not clear what will happen.
