Amanda Martin, the new president of the NEU teaching union, states that ‘teaching is still the best job in the world, it’s just tough.’ Amanda’s main goals as the president is to try and make teaching less tough and less lonely. Teachers spend so many hours planning and marking, being with their students and jumping through various hoops for Ofsted; teaching can become quite isolating.
Funding Cuts are Ruining Our Schools
Amanda wants to streamline the national curriculum as well as the ‘atrocious assessment regime.’ She goes on to say that along with huge funding cuts which has rid our schools of expert staff and teaching assistants, more and more children are phoning Childline citing mental health issues. Despite all issues within schools and education in general, teachers are keeping the system going. GCSE’s and SATS are all outdated; causing stress and pressure for children that should not be worrying about this kind of thing at their age.
What can schools do to help both teachers and students? Do you believe that Amanda could make a difference for schools in Europe?
